What We Can Learn From The Faith Of Old Man Noah

You have probably heard the story about that old man Noah and the ark which he built by direct instruction from the Lord. (Genesis 6-9) The Bible tells us that God saw the wickedness in the earth, and that He was going to destroy man from off the face of the earth, but Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. (Genesis 6:5-8) Listen to what the Bible tells us here:

The earth also was CORRUPT BEFORE GOD, and the EARTH was FILLED WITH VIOLENCE. And GOD LOOKED upon the earth, and, behold, IT WAS CORRUPT; for all flesh had CORRUPTED his way upon the earth. And GOD SAID UNTO NOAH, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is FILLED WITH VIOLENCE through them; and, behold, I WILL DESTROY THEM with the earth. MAKE THEE AN ARK of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make IN THE ARK, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. (Genesis 6:11-14)

You can read the whole passage if you like and you will learn about the dimensions of the ark and everything else, but the main thing I want you to see here, is that this old man Noah received a direct word from the Lord. That word included God’s assessment of the conditions on earth during Noah’s day. The Lord saw the great corruption, and that the earth was filled with violence. The Lord told Noah that the end of all flesh was before Him, which meant that the Lord God had decided to judge mankind. Is it not incredible that God Almighty gave this awesome word to a mere man? Noah was a person just like any other person on planet earth, and the Bible describes him this way:

These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. (Genesis 6:9)

Noah had a walk with the Lord and he was a righteous and blameless before God. Keep in mind that no man is perfect in the sense that we understand that word. We know that sin and death entered in through the sin of Adam (Romans 5:12) so Noah was a man in need of salvation just like everybody else. But Noah most certainly had a heart after God, and the Lord saw that, and called him to build that ark. The key to understanding what kept that man Noah going for all those years in building that ark, despite his surroundings, is found in this New Testament (Covenant) verse.

BY FAITH Noah, being WARNED OF GOD of things NOT SEEN as yet, MOVED WITH FEAR, PREPARED AN ARK to the SAVING of his house; by the which he CONDEMNED THE WORLD, and became heir of the righteousness which is BY FAITH. (Hebrews 11:7)

The answer is simple. Noah knew that he had received a word from the Lord, and He also knew that the Lord he believed in, and followed was a mighty and awesome God, that said what He meant, and meant what He said! The scripture verse tells us that Noah was moved with fear (the fear of the Lord), and that is what caused him to build the ark exactly the way God told him to. Noah knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that God’s Word would surely come to pass, and it was to the saving of his own house, including himself! Not only that but his building of the ark was a testimony to those who watched him building that ark, plank by wooden plank. The ark was being built on dry ground on an earth that knew no rain up until that point! The scripture tells us that Noah did all of this BY FAITH!

The true believer in Jesus Christ has received more than a word from the very same Lord whom Noah served. We have received the gift of the Holy Spirit and eternal life which also comes by faith in Him. The true Christian also has a healthy fear of the Lord and the scriptures have come alive to them, and that is because of the spirit of God within them.

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the FEAR OF THE LORD all the day long. (Proverbs 23:17)

We also are surrounded by many (most) who have little or no desire to know about the Christ whom we serve. But we keep pressing on by faith because we know that the Lord is a keeper of His own Word!

The earth was filled with violence in Noah’s time and the earth is also filled with violence in our own day. The Lord Jesus Christ Himself said this regarding the conditions before His return:

And AS IT WAS in the DAYS of NOE (NOAH), so SHALL IT BE also in the DAYS of the SON OF MAN. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, UNTIL THE DAY that NOE (NOAH) entered INTO THE ARK, and THE FLOOD CAME, and DESTROYED THEM ALL. Likewise also as it was in the DAYS OF LOT; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But THE SAME DAY that Lot went OUT OF SODOM it rained FIRE and BRIMSTONE from HEAVEN, and DESTROYED THEM ALL. Even thus SHALL IT BE in the DAY when the SON OF MAN is REVEALED. (Luke 17:26-30)

The true believer has found refuge, and safety in the ark of Jesus Christ Himself and we continue to walk by faith, day by day. Be encouraged in the Lord today.
